To use DDR3 memory, your system must have both a 204-pin SODIMM slot and a chipset that supports DDR3 memory. A DDR3 SODIMM will not fit into DDR2 or DDR memory sockets.
SODIMMs are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs, and the 204-pin SODIMM PCBs are always ~2.6 inches long and are usually around 1.18 inches high (though the heights can vary slightly). They consist of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The number of memory components on a 204-pin SODIMM's printed circuit board (PCB) can vary, but the PCB will always have 102 pins on the front and the back both, for a total of 204 pins. The gold pins on the bottom of the SODIMM provide the connection between the memory module and the memory socket.

The memory was easy to install (once I'd found a screwdriver small enough to unscrew the case - You'll need a really small phillips for this mac, but they're cheap and easy enough to find in electronic shops) and I was a first-timer. It's pretty much plug and play, and I noticed a significant improvement in performance immediately. Two months on and I still see this memory improving performance of Safari with multiple tabs open and of all applications when running several at once. Gaming experience has improved dramatically (games with minimum requirements of 2GB memory run so much more smoothly and are far more responsive with this 4GB upgrade). The free postage was also prompt, having received the package within two days of ordering.
Long story short, if you want that extra power for your mac I wouldn't hesitate. For this price you can't go wrong.

I was looking forward to upgrading my iMac to 8 gb so installed new cards in spare memory slot and started pc. Shows 8 gb now installed then pc crashes with message pc shutting down due to fatal error. Restarted and same thing happened time and again. Was worried the new cards had wrecked my iMac. Removed new cards and restarted and iMac working fine as before. Memory cards are now in my bottom draw complete waste of money and not happy at all. I ran the crucial test which also told me which cards were comparable for my pc. Any help or ideas how to resolve would be helpful but don't want to put them back in just i case it does permanent damage to iMac

Comments about Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2) 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-8500:
Recommended this product/company to increase my RAM - delivered in 2 days, so v.pleased - and put into my computer quickly. Speed has improved so much. Have had one or two blips (don't seem to be able to use Open Office to save/retrieve/open downloaded email attachments), but have got round that with Neo Office. Much quicker now to pick up bluetooth for photos/mouse etc.
