    240-pin DIMM

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. DDR2 is a leading-edge generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data very fast.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.)

To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module.

This is not a comment about the product but is about the ease of installation. I am not a computer engineer but I have a technical background - I worked in a laboratory for 20 years and am used to assembling "kit".

    1. Where the new memory boards are to be installed was very obvious once one had opened the PC.

    2. The actuall mechanics of installation is quite easy but with my PC there were multiple connecting wires "in the way", and so the instructions given on the internet[Crucial's web site and a link to a u-tube clip] are perhaps somwhat misleading in implying that the opeartion is a doddle. With my PC it was quite fiddly to get the memory boards positioned above the sockets into which they go.

    3. Nowhere was it indicated that the old memory board - which came with the PC - had to be removed. Since it was working (albeit very slowly) I assumed one could leave it in place and add the two new ones and have a total memory capacity of 2.5GB. Not so. On reconnecting the PC and powering it gave a continuous distrssed beep and would not boot. Opened up PC and removed old board - success!

I wanted to run Adobe Photoshop with less pain.
This is now faster, but not fast. It is working faultless (2 weeks). My problem is that DELL offers a different spec RAM Upgrade: SNPY996DC/2G | Dell Part# : A3132548. I would have liked to know from Crucial what the speed implications of these different priced RAM upgrades are. This information is CRUCIAL to buy your parts with confidence. Your part might be excellent, however, I remain unsure.

                Comments about Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2) 240-pin DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300:

It was easy to install using the info provided.
It did indeed work straight away with no problems.

There was no discernible speed increase.
There seems little point in moving to 4GB ram on a 32 bit system (as I found out afterwards) as on my Dell machine only 3 is available.
For heavy use such as video editing or even batch editing of photos, you are more likely to run out of CPU rather than RAM even on my previous meagre allocation of 2GB. Overall I would generally say look at getting a new system rather than propping up an old one!

Use Photoshop alot and this increased my Windows Index score of Memory operations per second by 20% from 5.5 to 6.9 however my Windows 7 SP1 sees only 3.25GB as usable as expected on my x86 (32-bit) operating system.
Windows Virtual memory now increased to 3327MB from 2997MB but can go upto 4990MB.

Make sure you disable Foxconn motherboard BIOS protection before installation

                      Comments about Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2) 240-pin DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300:

My Dell E520 PC was unable to carry out some functions due to the inbuilt 1Gb RAM which didnt meet the minimum requirements on newer kit I was now using. I fitted the 2 x 2Gb Cards in less than 10mins, very easy to install and my old PC has now a new lease of life. I could have bought the cards cheaper, but I thought Crucial provided the confidence on ordering the correct parts and also back up if anything went wrong. The delivery was also excellent, all round very happy with product and service from Crucial.
