    204-pin SODIMM

In short, 204-pin small outline dual inline memory modules (SODIMMs) are the form factor used to provide DDR3 memory modules for notebook computers and other small form factor computing platforms. 204-pin SODIMMs are currently available in PC3-8500 (DDR3 1066MHz) and PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz) speeds.

To use DDR3 memory, your system must have both a 204-pin SODIMM slot and a chipset that supports DDR3 memory. A DDR3 SODIMM will not fit into DDR2 or DDR memory sockets. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool.)

SODIMMs are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs, and the 204-pin SODIMM PCBs are always ~2.6 inches long and are usually around 1.18 inches high (though the heights can vary slightly). They consist of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The number of memory components on a 204-pin SODIMM’s printed circuit board (PCB) can vary, but the PCB will always have 102 pins on the front and the back both, for a total of 204 pins. The gold pins on the bottom of the SODIMM provide the connection between the memory module and the memory socket.

I installed 2x 8GB RAM modules into my mid-2012 MacBook Pro (last non-retina) & which gives me lots of room to play with as I'm never limited on how many apps I can run or buffering videos & memory intensive stuff. Another great use is you can make a RAM disk (see link below) for super fast performance like an SSD.

System Profiler confirms there's 16GB of RAM running despite Apple's official stance which says it only supports 8.

The installation was easy apart from removing the tiny screws on the bottom of the MacBook Pro for which I was using a tiny screwdriver which took a long, long time of trial & error to make work. Ideally you want a big screwdriver which gives you lots of power but it needs to go to a very small point at the end to be able to fit into the screws which are easy to wear out leaving the case permanently on!

I bought this when I was in Europe. Got home to Argentina and installed it. The first month something strange happened: my macbook didn't recognize it. I turned on and off the computer and it came back. It was great for 3 months, faster and great... and then suddenly my computer started to do strange noises and I was unable to turn it on. The memory is not recognized by my computer. Only 3 months of use, I am very sad and disappointed!!

Second RAM module purchased from Crucial - excellent service

    Comments about Crucial 8GB 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-12800:

I have bought x2 8gb RAM modules for my iMac taking the total to 24gb - it flies! Service is first rate, on-line chat helped me as I'd never installed RAM in any machine before. The on-line help was great too.

Now, how to justify adding another two 8gb modules?!

            Comments about Crucial 8GB 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-12800:

The hardest part about buying memory is making sure that the memory you choose fits the intended machine. Crucial's on-line detection tool can be downloaded very quickly and it tells you exactly the type of memory you need.

Having received the memory it is a very simple and quick job to fit it into the slots in a mac and improves system speed and performance immediately.
