    204-pin SODIMM for Mac

In short, 204-pin small outline dual inline memory modules (SODIMMs) are the form factor used to provide DDR3 memory modules for notebook computers and other small form factor computing platforms.

To use DDR3 memory, your system must have both a 204-pin SODIMM slot and a chipset that supports DDR3 memory. A DDR3 SODIMM will not fit into DDR2 or DDR memory sockets.

SODIMMs are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs, and the 204-pin SODIMM PCBs are always ~2.6 inches long and are usually around 1.18 inches high (though the heights can vary slightly). They consist of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The number of memory components on a 204-pin SODIMM's printed circuit board (PCB) can vary, but the PCB will always have 102 pins on the front and the back both, for a total of 204 pins. The gold pins on the bottom of the SODIMM provide the connection between the memory module and the memory socket.

I added an extra 8gb (2 x 4gb) to my iMac 27'' i7 3.4ghz (late 2012). Crucial provide excellent advice on the correct choice and fit for your particular product. Although when I carried out a auto scan it detected a 'late 2012 iMac'. But when I manually selected the My exact IMac from the detailed list, different options where offered????? This was off putting but after reading thoroughly the tech specs of each option I found they where the same. So just a website bug.
Very easy to fit on a late 2012 27'' iMac, no tools req. 10 mins from unplugging, accessing the Ram port, reconnecting and powering up.
All in all I cannot recommend this product and company enough. Will definitely use again and recommend to all.

I bought this product because it was "guaranteed compatible" with my 2012 Mac Mini core i5. In more than ten years of mac ownership I have never had so many crashes in all that time as I had in one afternoon after installing this product. I've used Crucial for many years, for both mac and PC and I used to rate them; but of the last five orders, about three have gone back. Switched to another manufacturer and my mac is running well.

Aside from the compatibility issues, the packaging leaves a lot to be desired, with the ram sticks tightly held in an inflexible moulded plastic packet. I was worried about damaging them when taking them out.
