    240-pin DIMM

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. DDR2 is a leading-edge generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data very fast.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.)

To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module.

My system was quite adequate when first bought in 2007, but Vista and my increasing interest in video making were taxing the hard drive and the poor thing was spinning almost constantly. More RAM was obviously needed but I was hesitant as I had never opened a pc tower before and in the past any time my laptop or pc required an upgrade, it would be taken to a service centre.

Advisors from a very well-respected forum recommended Crucial and I must say that the scan is absolutely amazing and a major reason why I was able to do the memory upgrade myself. With the correct components identified and different branded options presented, placing my order was easy. The 2 x 1GB kit I purchased arrived well packaged and complete with installation instructions. The memory was recognized instantly and I can see a huge improvement in how my computer functions. Even my sub-standard internet connection is running faster. An enquiry I made by e-mail with regard to my account was answered within 24 hours, courteously and efficiently. My Crucial experience has been positive in every respect.

Ordered an extra 2 x 1GB to add to the 2 x 512 already in my Dell as recommended by the scan. However, I kept getting a blue screen. Tried lots of things, even reinstalling operating system. Took the extra 2 GB out and no probs. Took the 2 x 512 out and replaced with the 2GB and again no probs. Seems there is a compatability issue witht the crucial RAM and the Dell RAM. I am now running on the 2 x 1GB and the 2 x 512 are of no use to me. The Crucial scan recommended this yet they were not compatable with my existing RAM. Disappointed. On the plus side, easy to install [...]

        Comments about Crucial 1GB 240-pin DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300:

I purchased the memory to upgrade a relatively old HP desktop PC, extending its working life by allowing it to use the latest versions of the Linux OS and improve its performance at the same time. The upgrade was performed without any problems. The DIMMs snapped easily into the associated computer sockets. At power up the computer bios recognised the increased memory capacity and did not require further manual configuration. It is too early to report on the long term reliability of these devices, but an extended memory self test did not find any problems and the OS is not reporting any errors.

I used this to increase the memory from 1Gb to 3Gb on this PC: EJ140AA - HP Media Center m7250.uk PC
This machine is running the original 2005 Media Centre Version of Windows XP (now unsupported), so its 10 year old!!
Crucial website advised me exactly what memory was compatible, even on such an ancient machine.
However, initially it would not run with old memory still in place (2 x 512Mb). After removing the old memory and booting once on the new memory (2 x 1Gb), I re-inserted the old memory again, and it was now happy to run both the old and the new memory side by side, despite different clock ratings. Go figure!!
