A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.
184-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR SDRAM memory for desktop computers. Standard 184-pin DIMMs are available in PC1600 DDR SDRAM, PC2100 DDR SDRAM, PC2700 DDR SDRAM, and PC3200 DDR SDRAM.
To use DDR memory, your system motherboard must have 184-pin DIMM slots and a DDR-enabled chipset. A DDR SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool.)
The number of black components on a 184-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 92 pins on the front and 92 pins on the back, for a total of 184. 184-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.25 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 184-pin DIMMs and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins.
I have 2x Crucial DDR4's CT8G4DFD8213 in an Asus X99 Deluxe mother board with a Intel 5820K. System boots fine but only shows 8gb of memory in the POST and in BIOS only shows 8gb in DIMM_D1
I have the other 8gb in DIMM_B1 which is the reconmmend configuration for two DIMM's.
I have tried each DIMM in DIMM_D1 to confirm the memory is OK, which it is.
I also updated the BIOS reversion after my troubles to the latest version 904 though I didn't think it would really do anything as the change logs for the BIOS update seem to address other issues and not memory issues.
So I think this memory is maybe not compatible with the new Asus X99 Deluxe mother boards.

My Motherboard is a Gigabyte H97 HD3. (Bios F4)
The Crucial Ram is a 8GB-Kit PC3 - 12800 CL9, 1.5v
I tested both sticks (together) with memtest for 12 passes overnight (0 errors),
Does it make sense to test each on its own ?
Are these components incompatible ?

Thank you for contacting us today. I pulled up the specs for your system. It looks like the1mb being read in the second slot is incorrect. I am guessing that it is either a 512MB or another 1GB module. You might open the case and look at the labels on both of the memory modules to be sure.
You are able to upgrade to 8GB of memory. You have slots for memory and can put a single 2GB module in each slot. You can use any of the memory upgrades that you see listed on the right hand side. You may install two 2GB memory modules and go to 4GB. However, keep in mind that if you have a 32 bit operating system you will only utilize around 3 to 3.5GB of memory.
