Important update regarding Crucial T710 SSDs
Certain Crucial T710 SSD products were shipped with firmware versions PBCR5101 or PBCR5102. These products were designed to include Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) functionality using AES-256 encryption, following the TCG Opal 2.01 specification. However, the encryption engine may not be properly enabled on some T710 devices with these firmware versions. This potential issue may affect the encryption of data, even if the system indicates otherwise. To address this potential issue, we have released firmware version PBCR5103.
If your Crucial T710 SSD shipped to you with firmware version PBCR5103, as seen on the product ID label on the SSD, your T710 is not affected by this potential issue, and you may use your SSD as usual. Please note that your SSD is not affected by this potential issue if you have not engaged encryption tools and do not intend to do so in the future.
T710 SSD firmware update
Version PBCR5103
RELEASE NOTES:
- Facilitates functioning of the encryption engine.
- After the firmware update is complete, additional steps are required in order to initiate the encryption engine. Please follow the instructions below.
.If your Crucial T710 SSD has firmware version PBCR5101 or PBCR5102, updated firmware, PBCR5103 is available through the Crucial Storage Executive software. If you do not already have Crucial Storage Executive installed on your computer, you may download it below.
What you should do
- Ensure that your backups are current and validated on a separate storage device. Backup is always important and will be helpful after you update your firmware to the latest version available.
- If you are already using or are planning to use Microsoft BitLocker in the Windows Pro and Enterprise editions, the functionality of BitLocker encryption is not affected by this issue. BitLocker users may perform the firmware update but do not need to perform the Sanitize operation described below.
- Obtain the firmware update using Crucial Storage Executive. Crucial Storage Executive has full instructions to help you through the update process. After updating the firmware, a full reformat/sanitize of the Crucial T710 SSD must be performed to fully initialize the encryption engine. This will erase all user data. This one-time action will be necessary to properly engage the encryption engine after updating the firmware.
- You can update firmware without Sanitizing your SSD, if you are not using encryption, or if you are using Microsoft BitLocker. In this case, the following steps to Sanitize your SSD are not necessary.
- The following steps will delete all data on your Crucial T710 SSD, so you should ensure that your data is backed up before proceeding. You should be prepared to recover data from backup or to reinstall your Operating System.
- If your Crucial T710 SSD is configured as a secondary drive, after the firmware update is applied, you may use the Crucial Storage Executive software to reset the drive, using the SANITIZE function.
- If your Crucial T710 SSD is configured as your operating system drive, you can use the SSD Sanitize function included in your computer system’s BIOS. If this function is not available, then please contact Crucial Support, and we will help you with this process.
- Request a warranty return. You may contact Support at Crucial.com to request a warranty return and replacement with a new Crucial T710 SSD that will have the updated firmware.
